Wife of Manmeet Grewal, 32, tells police her husband was under stress as he had unpaid dues and no work
Actor Manmeet Grewal, 32, who starred in serials such as Aadat Se Majboor
and Kuldeepak, committed suicide on Friday night in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai
. The police said the actor had been suffering from depression as he owed people money and many of his projects had been halted by the lockdown.
They said Grewal, whose real name was Amarjyot Singh, killed himself at his flat in Swapnapurti Housing Society at Sector 36, Kharghar around 9.30 pm on Friday. Grewal had married his wife Ravindra Kaur recently, and his family – including his parents – is in Punjab.
“His wife was eating dinner in the kitchen when he went to the bedroom and apparently hanged himself from the ceiling fan with a dupatta,” said Ajit Kamble, police sub-inspector at Kharghar police station. When she heard the noise of a chair falling, she went to the bedroom to check on her husband and saw him hanging from the fan, he said.
The police said Grewal was taken to Panvel Rural hospital, where he was declared dead. Kaur told the police that her husband had been under severe stress for the past few days as many of his upcoming projects, including a web series and some commercials, were in limbo.
She told the police that her husband had also talked about moving to a foreign country but that plan was also on hold because of the lockdown. “She told us that he had some loans that he hadn’t repaid as well,” said Kamble.
