NAVI MUMBAI: Two people were killed, and eight injured after a reactor exploded at a chemical company in Khalapur taluka, early on Thursday. The injured include two minors and an infant. Workers in the adjacent unit were hurt when metal pieces of the reactor landed on them. Two workers who were in the chemical company when the explosion took place escaped unhurt as they exited the unit quickly, as the fire gutted the entire factory.
Raigad district information officer Manoj Sanap said the explosion occurred around 2.40am at Jasnova Pharmaceutical and Specialty Chemicals, located in Arcos Industrial Premises Co-operative Society in Dheku village.
Ten fire engines and 40 firefighters extinguished the fire in a five-hour operation.
Raigad deputy collector Vaishali Pardeshi said, “It was learnt that on Wednesday there was chemical leakage on the company premises during the manufacturing process and workers in neighbouring units had complained of a burning sensation in their eyes.”
Pardeshi said that one of the deceased, Vaishnavi Nubane
(32), was the wife of a security guard at an adjacent unit. She was hurt when the metal parts fell on her while she was running out with her infant in her arms. The baby sustained minor injuries. The other deceased was security guard Anwar Khan, who was employed at Besto Company on the other side of the plant.
The eight injured, treated at the Khopoli civic hospital and discharged, were identified as 15-month-old Kirti Nubane, Ashish Nubane (9), Aarti Nubane (11), Krishna Nubane (40), Bishnoi Nubane (35), Girish Gowda (44), Sagar Kondilkar (23) and Nathu Pawar (30).
Pardeshi said the company manufactures alcohol-based chemical products. The ingredients used are not yet known, but the details have been sought from the owner, she added.
