NAVI MUMBAI: The NMMC will soon deploy special squads to monitor those responsible for open defecation in public places and debris dumping in open spaces and mangrove belts.
Residents are complaining about rampant dumping of debris and open defecation at slum areas which may dampen the chances of NMMC’s plan to bag the top spot in the nation-wide cleanliness survey this year. The civic body had won the third position last year.
The special squads will also conduct raids on shops and hawkers using banned plastic bags after Diwali to reduce non-biodegradable waste. The squads will carry out morning patrol and dissuade people from littering. They will also penalise the violators of swachh norms. NMMC has focused on slums, areas near railway tracks. Open spaces and mangrove belts, prone to debris dumping, will also be under watch.
