Raigad building collapse: Ragpickers fish for gold in debris; cops deployed | Navi Mumbai News

NAVI MUMBAI: Ragpickers and locals were seen looking for valuables like gold, at a site where the debris from the building collapse has been dumped at Mahad in Raigad district. One of the families that lived in Tarique Garden has claimed to have lost 120 grams of gold jewellery while another has stated that100 grams of ornaments and Rs 22,000 cash is missing following the collapse last Monday.
District authorities recovered a paltry amount of the gold from the debris during the rescue and cleaning operations. Raigad police said that a committee of residents has been formed to check the retrieved items in order to hand them over to the rightful owners.
Mehtab Nadkar, a survivor, said, “We lost 10 tolas (100 grams) of gold jewellery and Rs 22,000 cash. The missing valuables have been mentioned in the panchnama with authorities.” Another resident Bashir Parkar said, “Our families (Parkar and Bangi) were staying togeher in a flat and collectively lost 120 grams of gold in the collapse along with a few other things.”
Many claimed that ragpickers and locals have started searching for valuables at the site, which is around 300 metres away from the collapsed building. A tenant, Akhtar Pathan, said, “A police constable is posted at the site for safety of the valuables, which are likely to be in it. What they have retrieved till now is negligible.”
Raigad SP Anil Paraskar said, “Whatever (jewellery) was recovered has been handed over to the rightful owners after due inquiry. For the rest, a committee of residents has been formed, which will check the items and hand them over to owners.
